Our Programmes

Food from the Heart, best known for the Bread Distribution programme have incorporated to 4 other programmes, mainly Self Collection Centre, Food Goodie Bag, Birthday from the Heart and Toys from the Heart programmes.

The initial idea was to deliver unsold bread and pastries to welfare organizations, needy families and individuals. But with the operations and services running smoothly, coupled with the overwhelming support garnered from various organizations and communities, we have managed to run these four other programmes successfully thus far.

Brief Description of our five community programmes:

BREAD PROGRAMME (started in February 2003): Collection and distribution of unsold bread from bakeries and hotels with the help of 1700 active volunteers on a daily basis.
Average amount distributed per month: 23,000 kg bread
Direct beneficiaries: residents from 230 welfare homes + needy families
Number of beneficiaries per month: 22,000

SELF COLLECTION CENTRES (started in July 2003 with Marine Terrace RC as our first centre): Distribution centres set up in collaboration with Resident Committees, who evaluate and recommend needy families for our weekly food items. As of October 2010, there are 22 centres established island-wide. Food items handed out include bread and non-perishable food items like canned food, rice, oil, noodles and Milo.
No of Beneficiaries: 3763 needy individuals (as of January 2010)

FOOD GOODIE BAG PROGRAMME (started in April 2004):  Monthly food items (standardised content) provided by FFTH are given out by teachers to 50 of the most needy families in selected neighbourhood schools. Schools evaluate and recommend the recipients. A standard food goodie bag contains a bag of rice (10kg), 2l cooking oil, canned food etc, sufficient to feed the student’s family.
No of beneficiaries: 3679 needy individuals in 16 neighbourhood schools
(Fengshan Pri / Evergreen Pri / Teck Ghee Pri / Shuqun Pri / MacPherson Pri  / First Toa Payoh Pri  / St. Anthony’s Pri / Bartley Sec / Seng Kang Pri / Jurong Sec)

TOYS FROM THE HEART (started in July 2004): This is a yearly festive season project by FFTH held during school holidays where used toy items are being collected at donor schools and given to needy pupils in neighbourhood schools. In 2005, the project was called “Toys on Wheels” as we were displaying the toy items and “shipping” them around on a 40 foot truck, kindly sponsored by DaimlerChrysler. From 2008, the event was held at various schools, giving out about 10,000 toys through the Toys Buffet and various Food from the Heart Christmas Parties around Singapore. The event is carnival-like with food, drinks, fun activities and choosing of toys from the toy stores. In 2010, Chinese International School becomes the permanent venue.
No. of Beneficiaries: 5000 children

BIRTHDAY FROM THE HEART
(started in 2005): Monthly birthday bashes are held at welfare homes for children. Corporate sponsors are attached to a welfare home and the staff will participate in the celebration and bring gifts for the birthday kids of the month. As of January 2011, there are 6 welfare homes under the programme.
